Beyond the Party Label: Assessing Political Connectivity in a Shifting Landscape

by Chardonnay Bradshaw-Shallow, Associate Consultant

“We need somebody with strong Labour connections.”

It is a phrase we have heard regularly across public affairs briefs over the past three or four years (understandably). After 14 years of Conservative-led government, agencies and in-house teams recognised the need to strengthen their Labour credentials ahead of a likely change in power.

In public affairs, relationships matter. Organisations need people who understand the priorities of the government, know the relevant decision-makers and can engage credibly with those around them.

But fast forward two years: Andy Burnham is now Prime Minister, not Keir Starmer, and the Labour landscape already looks markedly different from when the party entered government in 2024.

This raises a broader question: what do “strong Labour connections” mean, and how long do they retain their value?

A candidate may have built excellent relationships with ministers, advisers and senior figures within Starmer’s Labour. But those networks will not necessarily carry the same value or influence within Burnham’s Labour. A new leader brings different personnel, priorities and political relationships into focus, potentially leaving people who once appeared exceptionally well-connected further away from the centre of power.

So, how can firms ensure their political connectivity remains resilient? Is it possible to future-proof a team against changes within a governing party? Or must we accept that, at the drop of a leadership contest, the value attached to an individual’s network can shift significantly?

Perhaps, the question is not simply, “Who does this person know?” It is: “If the political landscape changes tomorrow, can they build the relationships we will need next?”
