Senior, influential leadership role, determining the future of a foundational industry on which the UK relies for its energy security

About the role

Fuels Industry UK represents the companies that manufacture and supply over 85% of the UK’s transport fuels, investing in sector-wide transformation to help the country reach net zero. That includes conventional and lower carbon alternative fuel suppliers alongside terminal and pipeline operators.

Our members contribute significantly to the UK’s extensive and resilient fuel supply chain today and they are preparing for the future by planning and investing in projects that reduce emissions for tomorrow’s net zero economy. Our mission is to support our members in leading the delivery of a flexible and resilient fuels supply chain for the UK, both today and in the low-carbon future of tomorrow. 

Reporting to CEO and part of the leadership team.

Job purpose

  • Devise and deliver strategies for public affairs, stakeholder engagement and media, building productive relationships.

  • Produce clear, accurate and persuasive communication material to support the Association’s positions and enhance the profile and perception of the sector.

  • Engage members proactively and constructively to build consensus and support strategic priorities. Responsible for Associate membership.

  • Lead engagement with government on sector resilience, reporting and crisis management.

Main responsibilities

  • Devise and deliver the strategy for public affairs engagement, building influential relationships and enhancing external advocacy for the sector.

  • Devise and deliver stakeholder engagement plans to build the right collaborative relationships.

  • Devise and deliver the communications strategy covering media, website, social media, print, events and other channels, to build the profile of the sector and organisation and support public affairs and stakeholder messaging.

  • Represent the association at appropriate external forums and events.

  • Ensure all communications from association are consistent, clear, accurate persuasive and evidence based.

  • Lead the Public Affairs Committee with members, building constructive relationships and finding agreement. Input into the work of other committees as required.

  • Be responsible for Associate membership offer, attracting new members and ensuring existing members receive value from the association by regularly engaging with them.

  • Lead engagement with government officials on resilience, reporting and crisis management. Engage with members to support this.

  • Line management and develop a high performing team and maintain full oversight of their work. 

  • Actively input to leadership team to support the CEO in running an effective organisation. Role model the values of the Association.

  • Set and follow high-standards of corporate governance and competition law, ensuring outputs reflect agreed positions.

Experience

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of and experience working in a relevant sector: downstream, upstream, fuels or gas.

  • Significant experience of working in a complex stakeholder environment, influencing views through evidence, diplomacy and building consensus.

  • Significant record of success in devising and implementing public affairs and media campaigns, including as a spokesperson.

  • People management, developing a high performing team to deliver business plan.

Competencies

  • Confident, articulate, engaging - able to build credible relationships with senior decision makers including politicians, officials, members and Tier 1 media. Driven to build networks. Astute political judgement.

  • Highly skilled in writing clear, succinct, interesting, persuasive policy positions in a variety of formats, backed by research and evidence. A strong public speaker with ability to convey complex technical information simply to a variety of audiences.

  • Able to set goals, devise and execute strategies to drive forward delivery. Improve processes, set and deliver to budget. Able to handle a large number of workstreams, delivering high standards to tight deadlines, showing resilience under pressure.

  • Solutions- focussed. Actively demonstrate the Fuels Industry UK values (excellence, working together, integrity, professionalism) with a flexible, can-do attitude.
